72 hrs in London

another in-and-out trip. this time to visit an exhibition at marlborough fine art - and to give a lecture on RBK in L.A.

lots of fun. lovely hotel. one very very good meal. a visit to two favorite museums. 13 miles of walking (and that was just today).

postcard from here

june & july will see, between the four of us, trips to sf, ny, our island, to london, back to our island, and then our annual meander down the coast with much anticipated visits along the way.

we've made a kayak with chessi an annual event. we've done three different routes around montague with him, and he tells us next year we're ready for active pass.

and i think perhaps, our own kayaks as well.

this has to be one of the very best ways to experience our island. we all love it.

hope your summer is as full of joy & adventure. i'll drop a line when i can!

it's saturday night on broadway...

last night e and I went to Gigi at the Neil Simon Theater.

she spent today with her cousin while I attended a Catalogue Raisonne Scholars Association conference at MoMA - then we all met up at the (new!) Whitney, then walked and dined on the Highline. we decided later this evening to head over to Times Square then wander through the theater district and check out the lights. we walked back past the Neil Simon and noticed a crowd gathering at the stage door. impulsively, we ran and bought some NY postcards and a pen then joined the crowd. it was a little crazy, but so worth it. e got to "meet" the stars of the show and was thrilled. I got to enjoy her excitement.

I naturally shy away from crowds. Times Square and the stage door are experiences I would have missed if not for E.

Class of 2015

yesterday, E culminated from 8th grade. I still don't have my head around the fact that she is headed to high school. (though we've completed her registration and gone to orientation, and dug into her summer reading already!)

today, K culminated from 5th grade. this one was especially bittersweet as this school has been at the heart of our lives for the last 10 years. it seems like yesterday I was carrying her on my hip as we walked E to kindergarten. I have learned so very much about so very much in these 10 years. public education. community. equity vs. equality. pedagogy. leadership. and the importance of being able to let go. I love this school. I love the community that surrounds it. I love all it stands for. it doesn't have the highest test scores, or the richest booster club, but I have met few other groups of students who are more civic minded kids. their level of empathy and inclusion continually impresses me. they give me hope.

K gave one of the culmination addresses, and touched on all the aspects of her school experience that made it special for her. in a nutshell, community. "Grow Where You Are Planted", she said.

as they head off to our neighborhood middle and high school, I have no doubt they will.

now off for ice cream!
