good book night

and happy world book day.

books have been such a huge part of my life. they have been with me when i was lonely. and guided me when i was looking for direction. they have brought me happiness and taught me so much about myself.

WBN

I was giver today for World Book Night.

it was a kick handing out books to those who admitted to not really being readers.

the instructions stated to choose a book you had read. i chose to hand out nicole krauss' The History of Love in front of our neighborhood elementary school.

WBN

i spoke with a young mom, new to L.A. from New York who told me her english wasn't very good - but that she would ask her husband to read to her. to a grandfather who told me how much his granddaughter loved to read and so he wanted to read more too. to twenty people i don't know as they entered to pick up their children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors... from school.

a few asked me what they had to do in return.

and i answered "just read it. enjoy it. let me know what you think of it.".

so fun to share the joy of a good book.

What a wonderful action! Makes me think of what book I would want to share with everyone... Either The House on Mango Street or Stone Butch Blues. Cheers!

What a great thing! I need some recommendations for my reading group - what are your top three, lovely T?

Hmmm... Good question J. Without thinking too hard - and thinking about what I've read in the last few months: Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton; The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell, and The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides is taking me back to grad school :) (I'll add that I love this series.. my favourite so far is L.M. Montgomery by Jane Urquhart) What is the last book you read in book club? xoxoxo

Funny - we read the Thousand Autumns (most didn't like it, I liked it but didn't love it, started out brilliantly and lost steam somehow), I got through half of The Marriage Plot and gave up - didn't fit my mood at the time (that was the last book we read) - disappointing after Middlesex, which was sooo great. The group took a bit of a hiatus and is just getting back into gear. My fave book recently is Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, I'm apparently the only person on the planet who hadn't read it yet....

:) Interesting. I stalled on Thousand Autumns in the middle. Lost interest - then picked it up again and loved the last third. I am only a third through The Marriage Plot. Middlesex - and the Virgin Suicides - are two favourites so I am/was optimistic. I am big on biography right now. Just picked up the new one on Mordecai Richler, and recently enjoyed an old one on Beatrix Potter. Bel Canto. So good. xo
