{summer} reading list

summer reading

wanted to try and capture this, as we did last year.

K

Pegasus: The New Olympians, by Kate O'Hearn
Wonder, by R.J. Palacio
The Winter Pony, by Iain Lawrence
Dark Horse, by Jenny Hughes
My Friend Flicka, by Mary O'Hara
Summer Pony, by Jean Slaughter Doty

E

The Maze Runner trilogy, by James Dashner
Four: A Divergent Collection (Divergent Series), by Veronica Roth
If I Stay, by Gayle Forman
Paper Towns, John Green
We Were Liars, E. Lockhart
The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne

and on mine:

The Signature of All Things, by Elizabeth Gilbert (I never would have picked this up normally, somehow the tagline "author of ...Eat..." turned me off. But K's teacher told me she was reading a book this spring that reminded her of me. This is it. Curiousity got me.)
The Vacationers, by Emma Staub
Criddle De Diddle Ensis: A Biographical History Of The Criddles Of Aweme, Manitoba, Pioneers Of The 1880's, by Alma Criddle (I'm going to re-read this book that I read many years ago. Last summer I enjoyed reading For Elise, a newer look at the history of the Criddle-Vane family. I am related to the Criddle clan - and curious to revisit their history.)
The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne (from my university literature class - now on E's 8th grade reading list. I'm rereading this one with her too)
Trauma Farm, by Brian Bett
Eleanor & Park, by Rainbow Rowell (on E's recommendation)

what's on your list?

Currently reading A Death in the Family by Karl Ove Knausgaard. Mixed feelings.... when I'm not reading it, I feel like he's a bit self indulgent and disingenuous. When I'm reading it, I'm so absorbed that I lose all track of time.

Also on summer list:
The Torontonians by Phyllis Brett Young - interest peaked because it was described "as if Betty Draper wrote a novel"

Finish Anna Karenina!! Argh!! Currently bogged down in Levin's farm angst and haven't been able to get going again.

Vimy by Pierre Burton. Need to return to my sister.

And Eleanor & Park, also on recommendation!

oh I'll have to look for The Torontonians at the bookshop on Galiano. now my curiosity is piqued! i'm curious about the knausgaard too - but think it may be better suited to winter days at the cottage than those spent at the beach - though perhaps i'm wrong? (and do you remember what novels we read in high school? i tried - but couldn't. shakespeare with mrs. daniels was all i could recall!) xo

Oh i love book lists! If E is reading "Four" then i guess she read all the Divergent books? I recently finished them, embarrassed to say i enjoyed them greatly although a little dark and sad at times. My E is currently reading the Alaska book by John Green, i enjoyed the "Fault in our stars" of course. i too want to read "the signature of all things" and "the vacationers" looks interesting! I am currently reading "These broken stars" (another YA book described as the titanic in space) and it's very good too! i am really enjoying going back and forth between adult novels, memoirs and the YA books (although i struggled with "city of bones" the first "mortal instruments" book, such a harry potter rip off, i had no idea before i read it and since i bought it on audio just plugged on through, bleh! I think I will finally read the two adult books JK Rowling wrote, I have them on my audible list and a patient of mine said they are both great.

I look forward to your photos as you head on up north, gosh time sure flies! Seems like just yesterday you were heading up and here we are again!! Can you believe my "E" starts high school next year? Goodness! We are super excited! xo

Knausgaard would be great in the winter at the cabin!

High school reading...

Mad Shadows by Marie Clair Blais
Kamouraska by Anne Hebert
Fifth Business
Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
As for Me and My House
Lives of Girls and Women

That's all I can remember off the top of my head, other than the Shakespeare. Might be mixing up Jr and Sr high. Will ask Karen and send you an email. She has a crazy memory for this kind of stuff.
