the problem as i see it.

we are driving down a major thoroughfare in our neighborhood and stop at a red light. there is a large conspicuous billboard advertising a local "gentlemen's club" with a large conspicuous scantily clad woman on it - mouth open, eyes partially closed. my 4 year old proclaims, "look mom! it's hannah montana"

and that is the problem i have with disney. pretty much anyway.

I don't have a problem with Disney, but my, did your story make me laugh! I know exactly the billboards you're talking about! Thank goodness we don't drive near any in our neck of the woods. Too funny. I seem to remember "Mommy, what do those three x's mean?" Oh, dear.

oh, man... what did you say?!?

a friend of a friend has the disney channel blocked on her tv. her daughter thinks this is terribly unfair and complains about it a lot. daughter asks why she can't watch hannah montana, and the mom says she doesn't want her teacher asking her who her hero is, and having her say hannah montana. daughter (age 7) says that her hero is barrack obama, and lists all the reasons why. mom is impressed and says so. daughter says "NOW can i watch hannah montana?"

mom still said no. haha! but good try!

I know exactly what you mean, I'm scared to death of Hannah Montana. And Disney, to be honest.

i am scared of disney too and i live down the street from disneyland! luckily my kids didnt get on the hannah montana bandwagon. not sure why disney moved into this type of programming (other than the obvious, to make money) when it doesnt seem "wholesome" and "pure" or whatever they have always tried to portray, "magical?" hmmm.

i wish there were no billboards, arent they hideous??

man you hit the nail on the head, rather your child did. my 6yr old daughter is invited to a "high school musical" slumber party for one of her good friends. we are like 6yrs.old---high school? why?? just by the title alone we don't want to go there. now how to get out of it gracefully and non offencivly(sp). they already know we are not busy that day. any suggestions?

thanks all - there are things i do love that disney has done. mary blair (who did a lot of work for disney) is one of my favourite illustrators. i have to admit to loving the old-school aspects of disneyland. it really is the monopoly disney currently holds in the media that scares me - and the way they are marketing to my kids. childhood is precious. i do not appreciate having it rushed out the door before its time.

wish i could help you barbara! we have been in the same place - and all i can do is pray that i have given my daughters the tools to make the best choices themselves. we went to a high school musical party last year, and i was very proud that - when role playing some dance scene - my 6 yr old decided to play puppies with another little girl instead. it isn't easy...

ooh, children are so innocent... That's why it's so important to monitor what they watch on TV

absolutely sunnie! we don't have cable television - and on top of that the girls watch very little tv. but, they know hannah montana from the t-shirts, lunchboxes, backpacks, cameras... that they see in the shops, and on their friends. i remember vividly emily coming home when she was two talking about sponge bob - whom she had seen on a friend's backpack. aside from the television shows - it is all the paraphernalia that accompanies them that really gets to me.
