lunch to go

so know that i have some ideas of what to pack in the big bug's lunch this fall, i am left with deciding what to pack it in.

we have been using a small hard-shell igloo-type cooler - easy to keep clean, insulates well, very durable, may be covered with stickers, lead-free... but, the big bug tells me, too heavy. (maybe i could find a smaller size?)

then i came across these. a little more than i thought i would spend. but sound pretty good. pvc and lead-free. and machine washable. (i like the laptoplunches approach but worry about the wipe-clean instructions for the bag - split milk seems to need a good wash-out... and at that price i want something that is going to last a long while.)

and this looks fun too... how well do you think it would insulate with a coldpack?

what do you think? any tips?

update - this just found - will need to consult with the bug...

the pirate lunchbox is very cute! i have a plain one that i use as a purse, it came from the art supply shop and is very durable -- and was pretty cheap! ready for decoration, too.

I like the Fleurville one or the pirate!

My mom used to send me to school with cold meatloaf sandwiches, and they didn't really have cooler packs then. I wonder if I ever got sick from that?

I always took my lunch to school and the mayo and lunchmeat on my sandwitches never seemed to go mankey without a cold pack. If my mom did want something to stay cold, she would freeze it first for a few hours (like from when she woke up in the morning to when we were ready to leave) and then wrap it in several layers of newspaper. Not the most attractive method, but it worked.

e has reviewed my short list and is mulling it over. (i too am hoping the pirate box gets the thumbs-up!)

i too took a lunch to school (once a week i stayed for choir practice - the other days i walked home for lunch - oh those were the good old days!) and never had a cold-pack. my concern arises from the school set-up. given socal's climate the kids seem to hang jackets and bags on hooks outside each classroom (each room has a door to the outdoors / no hallways) and temps in our neighborhood stay in the 100s through september... i will have to speak with her teacher on this one i think...

i like the idea of sticking the lunch in the freezer laeroport - and the newspaper tip (comic section i think!) - thanks for the tips!!

My five year old has an OLD lunchbox like the pirate box (minus the pirate) - direct from a thrift store, where great grandma snatched it up for him to use with art supplies. He loved the idea that it was a "man's" "worker" lunchbox, and proudly carries it to school each day (it gets a bit heavy, but that doesn't deter him). I asked him if he'd like a laptop lunchbox this year... absolutely not (though I love them, they aren't as neat as this old one). All the ones you show are WAY nicer than a disney-fied type one, and I'm sure your little bug will choose the perfect one!
PS - as a former Socal gal - a simple cold pack (or frozen juicebox) will do fine, even in the warm weather. I wouldn't send stuff without something cold in there!
Cheers!
